I get good long-lasting waterproof seals with Roger's first two steps:
self-fusing tape (I use #70), covered with #33 (called "Black Gold" by the
3M people because it made billions of $$ for 3M (it's been around since
1947)). One layer of each, wrapped downhill, 50% overlap. I was taught this
method by 3M retirees (I live in the Twin Cities).
