You can use the standard CATV pin connectors with an adapter. I used a
standard CATV adapter to adapter from the pin to a standard N
connector. It worked fine through 440. The only problem was the small
center conductor for the 75-ohm N connector.
Pat suggested using the UHF barrel technique, which I've also used.
FWIW, I used a propane torch and melted enough of the dielectric out of
the cable to seat the UHF barrel. You can also use a standard brass
plumbing compression fitting and attach a UHF connector. This approach
was described in an old Ham Radio magazine. I think it was someplace in
the mid-late 70s.
And finally, I simply used a piece of 7/8" tubing and slide it over the
ends of the two pieces of hardline. I used small brass tubing, as found
in hobby stores, to join the center conductors.
So, to answer your question... is there any reason not to use
commercially made CATV splices... No, other than the expense. But,
there's a number of ways to do it a lot cheaper.
