typical industrial hard hats are of little use in climbing. They were
origionaly designed for bridge/construction work to prevent injury from
rivets being dropped from above. as such the protection is on top. as worn
by many workers at construction sites they seem merely to be worn to "look
good", worn way too high on the head, tilted forward. as noted by others
there is no lateral protection, and no chin strap to prevent it from coming
off if struck, or if you "turn turtle" while climbing - believe me, it
happens. the only things worth wearing are climbing helmets (as in mountain
climbing), caving helmets or white water boating helmets. they are all
designed to take lateral blows, severe blows (as in falling 200 lb
boulders), and have chin straps to keep them on if struck or turned. get
them at your favorite climbing, boating, store or URL - e.g. REI, petzl,
etc. they cost money, but what's your head worth ??
