In regard to pinning them on top of the ground, I use bobby pins that women use to hold their hair in place. I go through thousands so cutting wire up got old a long time ago. It will depends on the type soil you have as to whether they will work. Very sandy soil would not work as it would not hold them very well. My soil is mildly firm and the bobby pins hold them long enough for the grass to cover them.
