Or even easier when you disconnect the antenna does the noise go
down? When you reconnect it does it go up?
If you can hear the difference then the ambient noise + galactic
noise is higher than the noise figure of the RX. Depending on your
location one or other will dominate.

Another possibility is to listen for a signal leaking out of a
computer or a TV at a multiple of 3579 (7148, 14316, 28632).
Or call CQ on 28300. It's only dead cos everyone is listening.

Here's a quick test. Disconnect the antenna from the rig. Turn up
the gain
a bit. Now reconnect the antenna. If the noise level increases,
the rig is
probably fine.

Subject: [TenTec] delta 580 on 10 meters?
hi, just received my first tentec today - a delta 580. not sure
what to
think yet as it has a totally different feel and sound than the
japanese
radios - noise floor is definetely lower and signals seem to pop
out. its
a
nice radio, will take some getting use to - the feel is a bit
rougher than
the japanese radios but then again this radio is approaching 30
years old!
it seems to be a little insensitive on 10 meters - 10 meter
probagation is
not great, but i'm not hearing the loud pops and clicks as i scan
the 10
meter bands. has any other delta owners noticed this? any help
would be
appreciated. tia, john
