I don't have direct experience with the IC-7100, but that's how it works
with the IC-7200 and IC-7600.
You have to download and install a driver from the Icom Japan web site.
That driver and the installation instructions can be found here:

You must install the driver BEFORE connecting the USB cable between
radio and computer.
You can probably find the info on the web for one of the above mentioned
rigs and N1MM+.

I also highly recommend a YouTube video that Julian Frost N3JF produced
which walks you through the process of making an IC-7200 work with
