The last line of the attached note raises an interesting point. The IC-7100 probably cannot handle full power RTTY for extended periods. Is there a spec for the allowable duty cycle somewhere? I searched in my 7100 manual for an answer to this but couldn't find one. Maybe an Icom rep has commented on this?

Get the drivers from the Icom website.

After installing the drivers, connect the USB cable. There will be 4 devices created:

* The first COM port will be for CAT. Point N1MM+ to it as (probably) Radio 2 (after you enable SO2R), with the recommended settings. PTT via CAT.

* The second COM port will be for "data" (think it's for DSTAR work; not relevant to N1MM+)

* One "USB Speakers", which is for AFSK/soundcard digital output

* One "USB Microphone", which will receive audio from the 7100

Configure whatever combination of MMTTY and 2Tone you use to use those new sound devices.

The 7100 is capable of FSK, but you need a separate interface to achieve that.

If you do AFSK... the last time I checked N1MM+ wasn't handling the 7100 quite right.

For AFSK, configure N1MM+ to set mode=LSB for RTTY. You will have to manually tell the 7100 to enable LSB-D (pay attention to that each time you do a band change). Also, you'll have to manually configure the 7100 to accept audio from the USB port (Set > Connectors > DATA MOD > USB).

The DATA MOD setting is not sticky, by the way; you will probably have to reset it after each power cycle. There is a request to get this changed in N1MM+ in the queue, but (the last time I checked) it's not percolated up yet. (I think I'm one of the few 7100 users who have been given the development team input.)

You'll also want to spend some time configuring the filters on the 7100 for AFSK work. For that, the manual does a better job explaining than I can.

And, if you try it AFSK, remember to watch your audio levels, and don't forget that the 7100 isn't designed to be key-down at full power for significant lengths of time.

I'm getting more confused. My main radio is a Flex 5000 and I have successfully connected it to N1MM so I'm not a total neophyte at this but I'm still not sure how to proceed. I was wanting to add the 7100 as a second radio in order to try some SO2R.

I never tried connecting the USB cable as I thought there was no way to interface USB to N1MM directly. But a friend of mine suggested that maybe once I do connect via USB that a new COM port will appear and then I can interface with N1MM. I'm going to try that this afternoon.

My intent was to use FSK and I have already tested that part of the connection. It is the CAT functions I can't figure out.

Jim's post really has me confused. Jim, if you have time, could you please contact me off list and tell me how you have your radios set up? I guess I don't understand about the internal sound card. I knew the radio can decode RTTY directly but how does 2Tone process the audio if the soundcard is inside the radio?
