Well, ok I just can't resist....I spent 26 years as an Infantryman
and when I was a young rifle platoon leader I always got a kick out
of my old timers dispatching the newbies:
to the commo shop to get:
"A can of squelch" or some "Antenna grease"
or to the supply room to get:
"A box of grid squares"
or to the arms room to get:
"A blank adapter for the 81mm mortar"
or to the motor pool to get:
"A bucket of live steam"
And one fine Saturday morning at Ft Richardson Alaska I was checking
on my platoon area and found a brand new guy who had arrived over the
weekend sitting in his room staring intently at a half-filled glass
of water. I just had to ask and was told "Sir, I'm on earthquake
watch....the CQ told me to keep an eye on the glass and if the water
started to move I was to immediately report so that the earthquake
alarm could be sounded." I gave the CQ a knowing glance and quietly
departed the AO.
Ahhh, those were the days!
