Get a good microphone with punch. Used to be the Heil HC-4, which I think
is no longer available and that there is a new "contesting/DXing" element.
The receiving end of the radio (and features that might help your transmit
like audio tailoring) are the main differences in radios I believe.

John,
As is usually the case, the answer to that question will depend on whether
or not price is a consideration or money is no object.
Can you be more specific as to what you are willing to spend?

Subject: [CQ-Contest] Best 100 watt SSB contesting radios
I have been playing around a little in the SSB Sweepstakes this weekend, and
was again reminded of how CW contesting is much easier when you have a
limited station. I am in the market for another radio, and wonder if any
current or recent 100 watt radios seem to have an edge in SSB contesting due
to there audio? Are their certain radios that just have better "contesting
audio", where they cut through the QRM and noise better?
I am currently using a Yaesu FT100D HF/VHF/UHF mobile type rig. Do these
mobile type radios tend to have weaker or thinner audio compared to base
type rigs?
