Aha - now I see what you're getting at. At least up until this point 
I've been cynical about drive reliability, so have insisted on physical 
feedback.

What you're describing will work, but my cynical mind comes up with 
scenarios where the last state doesn't get written out to flash 
correctly; perhaps because of electrical glitch, cold grease etc.

And no, I'm not from Missouri... :;-)
