You don't want a dirty corona, do you?
You gotta have a washer.
It is a non conductive washer that performs the same task as the ribs on
your spark plugs our power line insulators. I believe it goes on the
solder tag of the switch prior to soldering the wire to it. It increases
the distance a potential arc has to travel, thus making it less likely to
occur.
