Hi Tom
I've been running my Red Pitaya since November 2016. I would expect the
QS1R is a better receiver, just from comparing my stations' spots to
those from stations with the QS1R skimming.
I have been diverted from doing more experimenting with the input
transformers feeding RP, but the RP does seem less sensitive on the
higher bands. This may be a simple issue of finding the right
transformer ratio for use on 6m. (RP input impedance goes down with
rising input frequency, if I recall correctly)
My RP skimmer is using a K9AY and a full sized "fan"
vertical(20m/15m/10m/6m). The vertical has 2 radials for each band.
This goes into a combiner, W7IUV style pre-amp, and a compound step up
transformer(3:1 into 4:1). These are the same antennas used with
previous softrock skimmer system.
If you use the RBN spots analysis tool and select for North American
stations, you'll see the set up is quite prolific. [try 2017/6/25, or CQ
WPX weekend] RP is MUCH better than the softrocks it replaced, and no
mirror images AFAIK.

Bob, when you use putty to log on to Red Pitaya, what is your version of
this....?
##############################################################################
# Red Pitaya GNU/Linux Ecosystem
# Version: 0.95
# Branch: master_oldkernel_release095
# Build: 1
# Commit: 6deb25343be65ef284c2b28f5f0ab1569d73a46b

Not 100% certain sure which 0.95 version ecosystem I am using, I didn't
clean up after I got this one working. This version currently running
here DOES allow a persistent password change for root. But I can verify
only that it runs CW skimm server(not running the Tee or RTTY here).
I plan to try out your instructions on a fresh install. Thanks for the
details.
For Linux folks, you should be able to log on to Red Pitaya terminal via
SSH. "SSH root at 192.168.1.100" in my case. Have linux running on a
virtualbox VM for that.
