Its an old thread, and I may have missed some of it....but if folks are 
looking for an easier way to whittle the data down, MySQL is worth 
considering.  I have several years worth of contest spots loaded, and 
can extract by callsign and date pretty easily.

Installing and learning MySQL is not trivial, but it is a "free" tool 
designed for the volume.
