Noise blankers come in two flavors:
1) Hardware noise blankers
2) Software (DSP) noise blankers
The older radios (OM6 and earlier) all had hardware blankers.
So does the Eagle.
The Omni VII and Orion have DSP noise blankers.
It is my understanding that the software blanker can potentially be
implemented to work as well as the old hardware blankers, but in most
radios, most of the OEMs did not do a good enough job of implementing it.
I believe all of the Japanese OEMs and even Ten-Tec and Elecraft got it
wrong, initially.
It was Rob (again) whose persistence in flagging this issue to the two
American vendors, got them to re-think their NB and fix it. I believe it
was similar with FLEX but as I said, I'm getting old and don't recall if Rob
was involved there or not. I think he said he told Gerald.
Unfortunately the Japanese OEMs don't listen to Rob as much as our US OEMs
do.
They don't seem to want to listen to anyone in the field.
It took Yaesu nearly 10 years to implement W8JI's $3 fix to their CW keying
issue that Bob was referring to.
Their FT-1000s polluted our ham bands for 10 years. Eventually most of the
ones in the field got updated (privately), not by Yaesu.
It will be a tragedy if Ten-Tec goes under. They have had an excellent
track record of listening to field input.

REF: Noise and noise blankers
I have a Triton IV with the noise blanker. It takes out pulse noise and
also eliminated static electricity noise from my vertical antenna during
stormy weather last week.
For atmospheric noise, and a neighbor's TV set noise, I use the ANC-4 Noise
Reducer by Timewave. It was recommended to me by another TenTec owner and
it works great (I have a small outside antenna to pick up noise). I have
had many QSOs with the ANC-4 "on" that I would not have been able to without
it.
Hope my experience will help others with similar problems.

I need to communicate with someone with experience with the Ten Tec
Omni Vi noise blanker. I push the button and rotate the pot with NO
apparent change in sound. I am convinced that the noise blanker is not
working.
Let's us discuss. 73, K5PGW

Depending on what type of noise, this can easily be normal. Noise
blankers only work on pulse noise like from an electric motor or
electric fence.

There is no Noise Blanker button for the Omni VI. Just engage the
feature more or less using the pot. If your pushing the button to the
left of the NB/SQL your attenuating -20dB.

?Thanks Carl and Richie. ? I went to the shack and turned the Omni VI
on and low and behold there was some impulse noise that sounds like an
arc or electrical fence or sign and the blanker worked when advanced to
the right.
It does not attenuate the 75 meter band noise or rapid line noise
which is the S5 to S7 ambient noise there this morning. I think it is
working on less rapid impulse noise. I will try the NR DSP button and
see if that helps..
I have had this WONDEFUL Omni VI over 20 years and like it more
everyday as compared to my three Icoms and Kenwood TS 2000. It is such
an uncomplicated outstanding piece of gear. Its' simplicity and
outstanding receiver are the greatest. I think I want another one. 73,
John, K5PGW? ?
