Interesting observation, JB. Now, I am NOT being critical or picky,
but just for my edification, are the numbers you quote dBi or dBd or
something else? I am interested in understanding the relative values,
wondering what exactly you mean by "x dB gain" - gain over what other
number? Again, I ask not to be critical, but to understand the exact
magnitude of the numbers.
I got a LOT out of the vertical antenna comparison report prepared by
K7LXC and N0AX, in which they compared a number of multiband vertical
antennas to a "reference antenna" - and after reading that report, I
concluded the reference antenna held up pretty darned well against the
pack, so I built it, instead of buying any of the modes tested against
it. Based on the data presented, the "control" antenna seemed the best
bang for the buck, and it has worked well for me. Go figure.
Thanks.

VERY difficult to get much more than about 5 dB gain over a dipole with
a collection of aluminum on a boom. That was the clear result of
extensive measurements by N0AX and K7LXC of a dozen or so of a broad
selection of tri-banders.
