[TenTec] Rigexpert Standard, N4PY, MixW, Ten Tec Orion & Omni 7

Hi all...
Am running across a problem getting my Rigexpert Standard to communicate via 
my pc's internal usb ports with either of my Orion or Omni 7...more so with 
the Omni 7.
If I use serial to serial ports and cable between the pc and either rig, it 
functions nicely for rig control and I can still use the Rigexpert's 
soundcard functions ok.
Using the usb port from my pc to my Rigexpert will give me tolerable 
performance with the Orion and very erratic performance with the Omni 7.
PC is an older Windoz XP home sp3.
I am beginning to wonder if my Norton antivirus has any  thing to do with 
the problem, or is my pc's usb ports not up to snuff?
