I would certainly think it can be done. I thought the DSP speech processor in the Orion was very good and maybe even as good as the 715. Especially the one in Version 1 firmware.

Why wouldn't a properly implemented DSP speech processor be able to

I purchased the 715 to use with my OMNI-VI+, but kept it to use when I
upgraded to the OMNI-VII. My experiences in DXing and Contesting show the
715's 6dB increase in TX average power to be perceived as louder (like
turning on a small amplifier) by the distant operator. I'm frequently told
that I'm loud while running just 100 Watts, but nearby Hams say the signal
is clean and narrow.

The 715 is probably your most cost effective improvement to for your
transmitted signal.

Richard -

I am not an expert on this topic, but I just went around with this myself
prior to the recent purchase of a 715 Speech Processor. The built-in speech
processor is an "audio" (DSP) processor. The 715 is an RF speech processor,
and (according to the operators I have conversed with) there is a marked
difference in percieved "loudness" and average signal strength indication
between un-processed input, the "audio" processor and the 715 with the RF
being the clear winner for loudness. Audio quality, eh...not so much.

Hope this helps!

Why does TenTec list the 715 Speech Processor as an option for the Omni VII?
I
thought the built-in processor whould be more than sufficient.
