Scott et All,

One great advantage in the ORION is you can tweak every different AGC
setting, not just the "Prog".

So whatever your choice of operating, you can match it in the settings
at will.

My example:
Slow: 0.73s , 10dB/s
Medium: 0.21s, 25dB/s
Fast: 0.08s, 80dB/s
Prog: 0.08s, 20dB/s

There is no science in the above, they are just the result of operating
the ORION (fw 1.373b5) from 2004 onwards.
I use the RF Gain vs AF volume in a 80/20 ratio and have it usually set
between 50-84, depending on antenna and band/ conditions.

Your mileage may vary.

This thread is very illuminating. I've had my O2 for five years now and still feel as if I'm using about 10% of its capabilities. I generally just turn it on, work some CW, and turn it off --- a little contesting, and a (very) little DX. It's great to be able to benefit from the experiences of those who are more intense users.

What's the argument for NOT setting AF gain at its maximum, and adjusting RF gain according to the received signal's strength?
