I, too, use only Amphenol or other name brands like Kings. There are a lot of cheap import PL-259s out there that are just plain no good. I remember some that had plastic insulators which melted when the center pin was soldered. I don't use crimp connectors, either, except for TV "F" plugs. Crimp connectors will work, if they are good quality and if one uses a commercial-grade crimping tool, but most of what is commonly available is CB junk. Also, some hams don't solder the braid to the shell on PL-259s. IMHO, this is asking for trouble.

I have seen people snug up PL-259s on a 2-meter repeater duplexer with a small wrench. Apparently, a loose connector here can wreak havoc with desense and intermod.

I live in SW Michigan, and use those on some of my antennas
in summer time. I have the AlphaDelta switches, also, and
use a grounding buss to direct the antennas to ground when
not in use or when anticipating a lightning storm. Ground bus
is grounded and bonded with single point grounding system, but
this takes them completely off the rig, quickly and easily. I also
use the Amphenol brand because they seem made better.

I like them because here in SE Michigan we have lots of lightening

the Alpha Delta coax switch which have long threaded connectors.
