WX4WX, Lance Lyman, while working in Malaysia and operating as 9M2AA,
handled a project to install NVIS communications for the Aborigine Dept.
of Malaysia to provide radio communications to Jungle hospitals far from
Telecomms facilities.
However, in the two years I knew Lance in Malaysia, I never heard him
call the mode he was using "NVIS". But, I think Lance based his use of
low dipoles on the experience the British Signals Regiment had when
pioneering communications in deep Malayan jungles while pursuing
Communist Rebels before the Malaysian independence in 1963.
Lance used a Don Stoner SSB radio for his mobile and base installations.
Don was a well known early, transistors for ham radio author, and part
of the first Project Oscar team. Later in life, he battled condo
restriction on ham antennas and operations.
