Definitely.
b) A TT ps protects the transceiver as it will shut down if the SWR gets too
high.
Almost true. The power supply only protects the PA transistors if the
high SWR load presents a low impedance at the transistor collectors and
so causes a high collector current. If the load with high SWR presents a
high impedance load at the collectors the power supply won't shut down,
its up to the voltage handling capability of the transistors to protect
themselves.
For those with generations of TT transceivers, can you use an old ps for
more recent transceivers?
I'd think so, they all run about the same output power, 100 watts and so
about the same normal and excess collector current.
And a new ps (962, 963) for older ones? (Paragon and Omnis)
I think so.
How quiet is the switching ps?
Some switching supplies are silent, especially when made for radio use.
Others are not so quiet.
