In many cases relay clicking may be better or worse depending on how tight the relay is mounted to the printed circuit board. If the person doing the board assembly pushes the relay down tight to the board the result may be more noticeable noise. If the relay is allowed to stand a millimeter or two above the board then the only thing touching the board is the support pins and not the relay body. This usually results in quieter operating relays.

Personally in either case, I would not think the amount of relay noise in these radios would be any hindrance to ones operation.

John:

I also have an older Orion (June 03). The T/R switching in QSK is literally silent, and I have been blessed with superb hearing. I had an Orion II here
and the relay noise was noticeable. Not loud by any means by clearly
audible. I asked Paul if they had made a change in relay manufacturers,
and/or mounting method. he replied they had not made any changes. I am
apparently VERY fortunate that my specific relay is quiet, and the mounting is not creating an increase in noise. I can put my head on the cover....no
noise. I could hear the Orion II when sitting way back in my chair. Go
figure.....

I have a new (to me) Orion (Orion 1, Orion I, Orion Sr., etc.) that has
a noisy T-R relay. Ten Tec service said the rig was OK, but there is
some normal clicking.

Anyone found a way to quiet it down?
