You say that when you open the case the problems goes away.
Check to see if one of the eight screws that holt the case on is touching a  
wire.
The tightening of the screws seem to be causing the problem by  touching 
something or slightly bending a board causing something to touch that  should 
not.
I would put the case back on and cause the problem to show up.
I would remove one screw at a time.
If the problem goes away with the removal of a certain screw look for the  
problem near that screw.
I would remove all the screws on one side (first from the top cover then  
from the bottom cover).
If the problem does not go away on the side do the other side.
The rig needs to be on when you do this and any other detective  work. 
I once fixed a rig that had the same problem.
Two other technicians kept looking at component problems.
The top cover, when made tight caused a board to bend and a trace on the  
board would open and the radio would malfunction.
I would look for that or a board touching to ground or one of the screws  
touching something to ground.
The rig will work fine once you find it.
