I have an old 'boat anchor' signal generator that I use, but you can also use another rig running into a dummy load or a local ham you can hear on ground wave who can put out a dead carrier for a few seconds. I found that no adjustment was needed, even on the 300 Hz filter. After tweaking the settings, the defaults were still the best.

It seems that one really needs a stable steady
signal, both in frequency and level to do this job.

Short of homebrewing a crystal calibrator (since
these seem to be few are far between these days,
even on ebay), what do people use for a good steady
signal source for this job. Off the air signals
seem to have enough QSB to be a problem and without
a second rig to use for a source, I was curious
what other people used...
