I think it must be the monitor circuit in the rig itself as Barry pointed out.We are using exactly the same rig, and headset, and mine works fine. The slight hum I have occurs when either a) listening to a dead quiet band, or b) the tone control gain is set past 12 o'clock.

Thanks for the replies so far.

The questions led me to observe more carefully. The problem only
occurs on the monitor, not on signals being received over the air.
That opens the door to an impedance mismatch on the microphone or the
phantom power issue. Or, as you suggest, a problem in the monitor
circuit. I'll check these out.
