Hi John,
I was a Red Hat enthusiast for a while, because that's
the distro that we used when I was getting my
UNIX/Linux systems administration certification.
After some problems with the last two versions and
64-bit CPUs, though, I tried Ubuntu, and now have it
on three machines at home. I would highly recommend
Ubuntu for a newcomer to Linux. The install is easy
to follow, and even configures tricky devices like
wireless cards.
Once you install Ubuntu, go to System -> Synaptic
Package Manager and you will see a category for
amateur radio. That should get you started.
