I have to disagree with you I also had a Icom 746 and not only was the rx 
audio poor but the noise reduction made everything worse .  I leave the 
noise reduction on my Orion II on all the time and it never hurts the signal 
and most of the time it helps !  My major complaints are learning how to use 
the high and low cut with the pbt and bandwidth and those darn cheap feeling 
knobs ! ( vfo knobs not included )  I how ever can not fault the rx it is by 
far the best I have ever heard !   John kb2huk
