Far too many FT-100D lost the VHF/UHF front end from poor grounding and
oscillation of the transistor.

So far the FT-857D which tends to run about $699 on sale but new and
about 600 used seems to not have that problem. I've had two for a couple
year now. There is a 5th connection on the power cable that can knock
the output power down from 100 watts on HF for battery operation. Power
dials down too. My radio club worked may contacts with mine FD two years
ago running on battery at 25 watts and feeding an 8' whip through a
tuner on 20 and 15 meters in my camper. (Lots of aluminum for the ground
plane).

The FT-897 runs the same hardware as the 857 but in a bigger case that
has room for a battery pack. The FT-817 runs QRP with similar
capabilities.

Many a scout has been used on battery and picnic table.
