For TV viewing I use a wireless speaker placed right
on the coffee table.  It allows for very decreased
volume and a much more pleasant listening experience,
yet there isn't the hassle of headphones or batteries
and all that.  I don't bother with stereo, but you
could if you want.  I use a second speaker out in the
kitchen since the TV is viewable across the family
room from the kitchen, she can then set the volume to
a low level in either room and have perfect
intelligibility.
