Actually, I saw a radio tower take 8 direct hits in less than 3 minutes
during a storm in Minneapolis. This was an FM broadcast station, and it
never left the air for a second.

The worst lightning hits I have seen resulted from the tower ground being
better than the house electrical ground. Lightening traveled the coax from
the house to the tower because of difference in potential. The hit was on
the power line.
Everything should be tied together as much as possible to prevent this
difference in potentials.
Even this will not survive a direct hit. Most "hits" come from inducted
near by strikes. If you have ever had your hand on a metal clothes line
during a lightning storm, you will know what I mean. (Don't try this at
home!)
