I'm sorry but I don't buy the analogy. CW is a mode that most of us enjoy.
Whether or not it is required for a license is meaningless. I have never
operated PSK31 but lots of people enjoy it. PSK31 has nothing to do with my
understanding of ham radio but it is a great mode. I think that is a more
meaningful analogy. CW has nothing to do with SSB and SSB was not built
from CW. Modes will come and modes will go. CW was just the first.
The average age of hams is somewhere around 60 now. If something isn't done
to get young people in ham radio, there won't be any ham radio in the next
20 to 40 years.
By the way, I think most people forget the ARRL is a non-profit
organization. They want more hams so the hobby will continue, not so they
can make more money (since they don't make any now and have no intention
to).
