Thanks to the amateurs responding on this, all of which are reproduced
below, but just once! I see my O1 is not unique.
To John WB4QDA: Try this. Turn on rit. adjust it up a few kc. Turn on
xit. Adjust it a couple kc. Now look at rit, it will be another {xit
offset} up the band. RIT and XIT will forever maintain whatever split
you have dialed in until you do something to correct what I will call
"the error".
To Merle W0EWM: My ritxit appear to work correctly, except the encoder
momentary push to zero has to be pushed hard and just right. My message
had to do with the usability of the current, operating correctly, setup
which I believe is not very usable.
To Duane AC5AA: No question. RIT stays fixed, XIT adjusts to match
current RIT. The reverse, seems to me, would be worse than it is now.
The utility of ritxit is to find a good transmit freq, then set the
transmitter there. Ritxit always in sync would be superior to the
current setup.
To Sinisa YT1NT: I can see some utility in separately adjustable ritxit,
but no sense at all in no ability to make xit equal rit.
Thanks again to all!

I also had problems with the RIT/XIT control. It had problems from the time the Orion was
new. In the early days I was told to pull hard on the control - that helped a little.
Later I called Ten-Tec and was told some "logging programs" caused a problem
with the control. That was not my problem.
I recently took the Orion to Ten-Tec when I went to the Hamfest. The first request on the Service Letter was:
"Replace the RIT/XIT optical encoder - Does not work." I also had all of the boards updated, had the V2 mod
installed and had the alignment checked. When I received the Orion this week the Service Invoice said there were 10
board upgrades done and the alignment was checked. It also said there was "No problem found with the RIT
encoder." It certainly works fine since it was returned - it has never worked this easily since the Orion was new.
I can only hope that "the change" is permanent. With so many people reporting issues with this control over
the past year or two, I am inclined to believe there is an issue with the control/function (Maybe a wave solder issue
on some of the boards). I really don't like "electronic mysteries."
One thing that I learned at the Ten-Tec open-house is that Ten-Tec is bringing out a
new board for the Orion II and the OMNI VII that is a high performance - real-time -
bandscope add-on. Apparently there is a "connector built into both the Orion II
and the OMNI VII. I did not hear anyone indicate it would be available in the Orion.

On my Orion 1, 2.056 firmware, when RIT and XIT are both turned on (when
both are different) just lets the one control move both of them relative to
their starting position. If they are offset from each other, they remain
at that same offset while the frequency of both moves. Nothing other than
resetting both of them causes them to have the identical offset. I would
also welcome a quick button push to sync one to the other (and now we can
argue about which moves and which stays!)

Having separate offset values for RIT and XIT
is an example of useless generality.
It will suffice to have a single offset value
used by both RIT and XIT, just like with
any other radio.
