Another simple way to do this is to buy the Heil FS-1. It comes with two 
plugs...one goes to the amp and the other to the rig...when you hit the 
footswitch, it automatically first turns on the amp, then the rig...not 
elegant, but simple.
I also have the Yaesu FRB and it works great..I used it for years to key 
a 30L-1 with an Icom 735.
