Backing off on the RF gain (not the IF gain) can minimize the excess
signal power stored in the filter to make the thump.


Unfortunately, there is no RF Gain control on the Argosy receivers.  BUT...
there is a classic article by Cornell Drentea, WB3JAO (now KW7CD),
"Upgrading the Ten-Tec Argosy" from Ham Radio, Nov 1986 that addresses the
"pop" in this thread.  See page 43 "improving audio AGC charactersitics",
and page 44, "rf gain control".
