The artifacts appear to come from and be related to the remaining audio, so you probably wouldn't hear anything with just a carrier and random noise. I used the big 40 meter SW broadcast signals to test on. Null out the carrier and you hear a 'crackling' distortion on any remaining audio in the passband. Narrowing the passband seems to mask the crackling, although it's still there. Go back to 2.032 and it's clean.
