For those who emailed me about the updates. I have no clue whatsoever about
any updates you can do yourself and I never asked them about what they could
or would do. I just sent it in with Carte Blanche to do whatever it took to
make it the most updated top shelf Orion available. I didn't care about the
color screen and I suspect that this version with all of the updates and
Inrads will give the O2 a run for it's money with a LOT less cash out.
That is my way of doing things since if I have no time to use it, I darn
sure don't have the time to mess with user upgrades. It took I think over a
month to get it back which answers another users question. I am VERY happy
with the work of TEN TEC and have no issue with what it cost. I have heard
the results..Ya get what ya pay for :)
Heck...Another couple of these emails and I will talk myself into keeping it
and sell the MK 5! Hi

Correct....measured using Spectrogram
but I have never received an explanation from
Ten-Tec, although I have asked several times.
There is obviously some other effect going on
because the filter clearly cannot change
bandwidth itself, but the effect is the same.
To measure this, I set DSP BW = 6000 to remove
any DSP effects and use a noise generator with
Spectrogram to view the resulting spectrum for
CW versus SSB modes.
You can actually hear this without any
measurements. Listen to band noise in CW when
switching between the 1000 and 1800 filters
(remembering to set DSP = 6000) and you will
hear very little change in the character of the
resulting noise (assuming good ears).
This is very strange behavior but I
actually like it since the 1800 filter in
CW gives a reasonable BW (1400 Hz) for S&P
type operation in contests.
Anyone else have any explanations for
this?

There was nothing wrong with the Orion # 09C10052 when I returned it, I just

After indepth discussions on Orion Filters with some Orion gurus along with
George at Inrad, the following config is what we determined best for both
contesting and daily use. This is what is currently installed.

I also have two Top Ten band decoders for the Orion, before someone asks,
one is a spare :)
I will also eventually be selling the entire contest station here...plays
very strong, many top ten USA with #3 USA WPX last year 20M SOHP. Everything

reflector.

I'd guess it would, but each situation is different. Just say good luck

that one. My Pegasus isn't any more suseptible than my K2, LDG tuner, or

A counterpoise did work ok for my pegasus, but not for the digital
modes, rtty, psk31, amtor, etc.
Go with callsign software if you intend to do any digital modes, it is
much better, and that g-filter is superb!

I redid the measurement, this time with an HP 331A Distortion Analyser
The results are about the same -- 8-10dB measured on 14 Mhz, and around 5-6
dB measured on 7 Mhz where the noise has a different characteristic. Last
night, when 40 was much noisier than it is this morning, the improvement was
only on the order of 3dB, but that was measured with a non-RMS meter so I'll
have to take another look at it tonight.

Thanks for the list of repairs/mods Tommy.
Am I alone in wondering if Ten-Tec would consider publishing these mods?
For example the FSK mod is published on the RFSquared site as well as, of
course, the "Updated CPU/DSP Board for 2.0 Firmware".
I for one would love to update my Orion to these standards. Sending back a
working Orion via FedEX International Air for some updates is not currently
cost effective. It sure would be nice if these mods were published. Are
they part changes? part additions? I'm sure some owners, myself included,
would like to update their own Orion if the information was available.
