I have the Orion II running 2.030 and I run a vertical
on 80m and so the band is quite noisy. I find the NR
works. However there is distortion on weak signals.
I am very active with my AGC settings and find that
signals have to raise the S-meter to not be distorted.
This sort of makes sense. I find that raising RF
gain and lowering the AGC threshold is necessary to
reduce NR distortion.
Of course if the signal is strong enough to raise the
S-meter then I can reduce noise just as well with AGC
threshold and/or RF gain. So I am not sure that NR is
getting me anything. As a result, I don't usually use
it.
