I have both a Field and an Orion.
The Field looks like a shiny Ferrari - the Orion looks like an old VW
Microbus with paint missing.
The Field has no firmware to glitch. Things may not be changeable but they
all work. The Orion is still not right and progress has been one step
forward and two steps back with each new release.
The Field's controls are a lot easier to use - there are simply more of them
on the front panel.
The Field has a built-in power supply (with all the room in the Orion box, I
don't understand why TT didn't put in a power supply). Not really a big
deal.
That is the end of the advantages of the Field.
Advantages for the Orion:
The Field has a front end as broad as a barn door and you can hear it
squeak. I have not tried the INRAD roofing filter for the Field yet but it is
4000hz wide vs. as low as 250Hz for the Orion. I used a 1000MP with INRAD
roofing in the ARRLDX last weekend and I was not impressed.
The Field has fixed filter widths and not many of them vs. continuously
adjustable for the Orion.
Operationally, the Field is far inferior in spite of its good looks.
However, if you are just a casual operator who works mostly SSB rag chewing on
the
WARC bands, the Field will serve you just fine.
