We found the same to be true to exist within a fleet of corporate aircraft.
Those that were flown by pilots that smoked clearly had a track record of
higher incident of electronic repairs as opposed to those that were flown by
non-smoking flight crews. The planes and electronics packages were
identical. The increased repairs contributed to higher operating costs.
Thus a new corporate policy where crew smoking was banned in every aircraft.
The result was higher reliability, lower incident of failure, and several
new non-smoking pilots as the "old puffers" would not comply with the new
corporate policy.
