I recently did the exercise of comparing the RX-340 with a separate
transmitter (actually Pegasus) to the Orion, as far as amateur use only.
The RX-340 is very limited in the close in distortion range. You may
want to look at Rob Sherwood's test on the ONE RX-340 that he has
tested. Look at the bottom of the page, I didn't think he had tested
it, as I expected it to be up with the HF1000, etc, but it actually is
down with some pretty poor receivers as far as close in performance is
concerned. I talked to one of the engineers who worked on the RX-340
and he said that they have not had any complaints, and that close in
distortion range does not seem to be that important to their clients.
If you look at the top of Rob's chart you will find the Orion.
If digging out the weak ones in a CW pileup on 40 meters is one
criterion, then the Orion is much better. On the other hand, for SWL
use, the Orion has a general coverage receiver about like that on the
Pegasus. The final discussion with one of the Ten-Tec engineers
indicated that he knew nothing better than the R-390A with Rob's synch
detector for general coverage SWL work. You may also notice that the
Omni VI+ has very good close in performance, especially if you add the
roofing filter mod. I use the Omni VI+ and R-390A with SE-3A. I also
have Drake R-8B, Collins HF-2050, Icom 756 PROII, and until recently a
Racal 6790-GM3 for comparison. I will probably purchase an Orion in a
few months.
