I have experienced this problem. After a while I found that though the AGC
was indicated to be on, I believe it was off because setting the AGC to off
resulted in no change, just that raspy blasting of an overloaded receiver
with the RF gain up and the AGC off. Reapplying AGC usually cleared the
problem as would a power down/up. I suspect this was the result of a
software glitch and so reported to TenTec.

explain the seemingly inconsistent results I've
gotten. In contests, I normally use Prog so that
I have full control of everything...and if that were
10 uV it would explain why I had no problems
in contests.
I just ran my MFJ-259 through an external
Preamp to get an S9+60 test signal. Even with
Threshold at 1 uV, Internal Preamp On, RFGAIN 100
any NB setting and any roofing filter, I cannot
induce distortion. I've heard it before so I know
it happens under some conditions, but whatever they
are I cannot seem to duplicate them at the moment.
