Hi to all--

Perhaps there is over voltage spike generated. If you connect a 1.5KE15A diode across the supply line( band to positive lead) between fuse and rig, the spike will be clamped. The fuse will also blow.

This is on the rig in the van. I cannot attest to its' effectiveness as I have had no problems.I got the idea from "An Ounce Of" on page 38 of May, 2002, "73 Amateur Radio Today." K7SUB was author.

PS. I can copy and send a full copy via USPS. -- aal

TT said they would repair the Omni again for no cost to me....I didn't
inquire about shipping, but am sure glad I have my Ft 990 for a back up
rig.....
It keeps chugging along.....
I suspect...and its beyond my modest test equipment to determine....that
something inside of the Omni is goes into ocillation that normally does
not.
I don't think it has anything to do with my power supply system.
I could pick up a TT power supply to feed the omni, but that would be
counterproductive.

Looks like you're getting plenty of feedback concerning that

oscillation.

My first thought was "what bloney!" Then I realized I had misspelled
bologna. Really, when it comes right down to it....You can't prove or
disprove any of this power supply theory without it costing you

another

trip to TenTec! I mean,,,are you going to get that VI fixed and hook

it

back up to that same system just to see if it blows up again? I think

not!

So then are you going to hook it up to another supply for testing and

run

it for a few days and THEN hook it back up to the other supply just to

see

what happens? Again, I think not. I think you're stuck. TenTec will

never

"approve" your power supply but they will continue to blame it for you
trouble and maybe, just maybe there is some incompatability going on

here.

Who knows...Too expensive to find out!

Subject: [TenTec] Omni VI and power supply occilation???

I recently purchased a used Omni VI that quit transmitting, sent it in

to

TT
for repair and alingment. TT replaced the finals and some other

work...

I recieved the repaired Omni yesterday and wasted no time getting back

on

the air.
This morning....no rf out AGAIN!!! Exact same sympthons as before.
I made a call to the TT repair department, and they said since I run a
homebrew power supply, I may have an ocillation from the power supply

that

is destroying the finals in the Omni.
What ocillation??
I have used this power supply for years. It is currently feeding an FT

990

and uhf/vhf radio without problems. The power supply has fed various

TT hf

rigs thru the years without problem. Is there something unique about

an

Omni
that will not allow it to be used in my station on the existing power
supply??
The power supply is currently hooked up to a pair of absorption mat

deep

cycle batteries with a blocking diode between the B+ and the

batteries. It

has been used this way for quite some time without problem, and the

power

supply alone is capable of 35 amps continous all day long.
TT also tried to tell me this morning that I may have to run the Omni,
when
it gets back from being repaired a second time, on a separate power

supply

that will shut down when it detects ocillation.
Anyone run across this before...thanks....
