Caity, it might not be the tuner overall, but just its balun, (if an
internal balun, Tee design tuner). Many of the older designs used a voltage
balun rather than a current balun. You can salvage that, by not using the
internal balun of such a Tee Tuner. Instead, buy a Van Gorden 4:1 balun, or
build one of similar quality for easier tune ups. The Van Gorden was $14 at
local ham store.
Put it via a one foot coax, on the UHF connector for unbalanced antennas on
the MFJ. You will enjoy higher Q tuning with definite settings for the
bands in use.
Now if you are using the MFJ- L net tuner; it does not have a balun, so the
above advice does not apply. But, some have gotten adequate balance by
following an L net tuner with a balun to step up and balance the output into
parallel lines like ladder line or twin lead feeders.
