My defense on harping on the OMNI VI is contained in my original
post on this topic:
>>>>> This kit, without a circuit
board, is only $24. Although a purchaser of a $3,000+ radio
may not wish to cut corners on a $109 filter, owners of older
rigs may. In particular, given the cascading nature of the filters
used in the OMNI VI, this may be a way to upgrade for relatively
little cost. <<<<<<<
Furthermore, I believe the used cost of 9MHz filters has been,
and will continue to, increase with the introduction of the Orion
and its purchase by people who don't have any old OMNI's to raid
for filters. I, too, have seen bum used filters, which is another
reason why I believe the true expected cost for a used 500Hz filter
is higher than $60:
(probability of getting a good filter) x (cost of used filter)
+ (1-probabililty) x (cost of new filter) + hassle factor.
This expected cost assumes you don't stick some other poor soul
with the known defective filter to recoup your losses.
