Replying again to my own Post:

Scott just did exactly what I suggested (in fact he did it before
I suggested it).
He explained how to set up the radio to do what contesters want
to do.

Thanks for sorting it out for us Scott - but I don't think it's
easily apparent to most people just from reading the book.
I'm going to document your instructions  in a step-by-step setup
procedure and assure my club members understand it.

We can live with point #5 - either as is, or roll our own.
