No, it's not a concern at all. When you load firmware into the Orion, the
RUF file must follow an exact format or it will not load.

As has been pointed out in previous postings, there is precious little
information available (outside of the manufacturer) to guide a ham's
transceiver purchase. ARRL is one source, and people with good test
equipment and know-how, like W8JI, are another.

W8JI focuses on 160, which is not my band of choice. Nevertheless, Rauch
does make some comments of general applicability. His war on key clicks is
an example. (Regarding key clicks, Rauch's most recent postings have been
quite pessimistic about getting manufacturers to improve in this area. I am
sure one of the aspects of the ORION Rauch will closely examine is the
shape of the CW keying envelope, something we know Ten-Tec has addressed.)

I have been pleasantly surprsied to discover that the keying bandwidth of
my IC-746PRO is relatively modest, about 1 kHz, compared to the atrocious
2.5+ kHz of my FT-920. The QSK performance of the IC-746PRO, moreover, is
smooth as silk, not thumpy like the FT-920. Another surprise. (I haven't
had a chance to make an evaluation of my new/used OMNI VI since it is back
at Ten-Tec for repairs.)

With regard to the ARRL written reviews, I given them the benefit of the
doubt as to the integrity of the writer-upper. However, it seems that with
the depaqrture in the mid-90s of Rus Healy, who operated largely CW, there
has not been a reviewer who is a CW fanatic. Healy did very good reviews,
for example, of the FT-1000D and the original OMNI VI. The folks who have
been writing the reviews lately seem to be diligent, but their interest
seems to be more in SSB ragchews than in CW DX and contests. Others
evidence preferences for VHF and digital modes. So we end up with a
catch-as-catch-can write-up from the perspective of a particular reviewer's
preferences, the end product often being not all that helpful from my point
of view. As has been pointed out, the QST review of the Argonaut V did not
do this fine rig any favors. I thought it deserved more positive coverage.

Another issue is that ARRL's standards have slipped. Early and mid-90s
reviews would mention critically if a transceiver's 3d-order IMD on
transmit fell below -30dB. These days, a -24dB IMD finding elicits no
particular response from the reviewer (Cf. IC-703 review).

I think this reflects the precarious budgetary problems at Newington
(second or third year of deficits?). My solution is to promote membership
in the ARRL so it does not continue to have to operate on a shoestring.
With ARRL on a sound financial footing, the reviewers can become more
independent of QST's advertisers and the reviews can be of greater value to
the members.

Finally, ARRL's lab tests only one sample of a transceiver, and sometimes I
scratch my head as to the numbers. A case in point: the 3d-order intercept
point reported for the Argonaut V.

We all await with interest what QST reports about the ORION, probably in
late fall or early winter. (I hope they wait until they can get a couple of
CW contests under their belt before publishing the review.)

73,
John

This is an extremely serious problem with these new radios.
Why you could be tuning across the band one minute and next thing you
know, your radio's been infected, the disease spreads through the power
lines,
your vacumn cleaner grabs the cat buy it's tail, tosses it in the microwave
and it's Chinese food for dinner....

On a more serious note...

Most of us love the olfactory stimulation resulting from a sensuous
tendril of
resin smoke. (Comes from melting solder for you appliance guys!). This note
is to report a similarly pleasurable experience that every guy who performs
is own lawn maintenance can enjoy. Did it myself last weekend and for the
first time in my life am actually watchign the grass grow in anticipation of
mowing it again! What am I talking about? Well if you're 50's plus or minus
a bit, you probably flew motorized model airplanes as a kid. U-control,
free flight, or radio control. I've stumbled upon a simple way to bring
all those
memories of warm summer days and racous engines. Some of you guys
already have lights going on in your heads....

Back to the lawn mowing. With only about 10,000 sq feet to cut a tractor
is out
of the question. The only manly option then is a big TWO STROKE mower.
Lawn boy, McCollough, Jacobson, take your pick.

Now for the meat of this message. Get your ass over to the pharmacy and
spend the
$3.50 it takes to purchase a 4 oz. bottle of Castor Oil. For the last 20
years or so
1:32 is THE mix so also pick up a gallon of regular. Mix 'em up, pour
mix in, and
commence to cutting. Under the warm sun, as the aroma of burning castor
oil makes
it's presence known, all your memories of youthful model flying return
and before
you know it, the tanks empty and your watching the grass, mentally
urging it to grow...

The risk of viruses or worms being turned loose in/on
radio(s) such as an Orion (or any other Ten Tec Flash
ROM based radios) is for all practical purposes zero.

Even though it is micro processor ans DSP based it
really is not a "computer" at all like a desktop PC
is, in fact the Orion and its predecessors are highly
specialized designs that share nothing at all in
common with a desktop PC. Additionally worms and
viruses depend on mechanisms to propagate themselves,
such mechanisms simply don't exist for any of these
radios. Worst case case thing that someone could do is
create a bogus RUF file that does strange things and
then somehow get it distributed out to a lot of end
users, an extremely unlikely scenario. Even then they
couldn't make it self-propagate from radio to radio,
so as far as a worm or virus would go it would be a
total dud. Also they would need to have a radio on
hand in order to understand how it works and to then
be able write malicious code and debug it, I can't
imagine that a virus/worm writer would make that kind
effort or investment to begin with, especially for
something so esoteric as a amateur radio transceiver.

I don't see any risk with existing worms or viruses
damaging the RFSquared supplied RUF files either,
again they are so specialized that it is very unlikely
that anyone will write a worm to even be aware of them
much less to wreak any havoc with them.

I remember the smell of those U control model airplanes and all those Cox
.049 engines. So all I need to do is get some Castor oil and cut the grass.
Sounds very fun and nostalgic.

Of course, then one needs to drink brandy... to offset the ...er....
