Hi, Jamie. The 544 manual also says that transistorized microphones may also
be used as long as the output level is set low enough so as not to
overdrive the input stage of the rig. The D-104 may work just fine as is. I
would just hook it up and give it a try. I have used several different mics
with my Triton IV, some of which I am unsure of the impedance, and they have
all worked just fine with good audio reports. Used a Turner Super-sidekick
for a long time, was OK as long as I kept the gain pot turned down to a
minimum.
There was much discussion on this list a couple weeks ago concerning using a
D-104 with TenTec radios. There were several suggestions about building a
matching transformer for the mic, also about building a replacement amp
circuit for the mic. You could look back at the list archives on
contesting.com and you should be able to find them.
And last but not least I have a Shure 444-D sitting here on the shelf that
will plug and play with the 544 if you are interested. It has a hi-low
impedance switch in the base.
Good luck with the rig and hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine. Put it on
the air and check into the TenTec users net. 14.329 every Sunday at 21:30Z.
