The crystal D-104 needs a very high (> half meg) input resistance else
it gives a weird frequency response. That's accomplished by the preamp.
If the preamp has too much output, then a step down transformer (high Z
to low Z balanced from RS) will lower the voltage, or else cheaper, a
two resistor attenuator will drop the voltage. I doubt the Pegasus has a
really high input Z. And that step down transformer won't get to a half
meg either. Its high Z side is probably 50K which is too low for the
crystal D-104.
