You > will get meaningless reading because the impedances are unknown" Perhaps a more correct statement would be that the impedance at the meter position is not 50 ohms. Many meters only work correctly when terminated with the design (usually 50 ohms) impedance. However, check your meter documentation - it should say what conditions are required for accurte readings.
