I recently read some items in "QST" that could possibly explain the
problem with finals. These items referred to the effects of gravity on RF
energy. Perhaps, therefore, the damage is caused by the RF left in the
cable draining back into the rig. I suppose that forcing RF back through
the finals is causing excessive heating. This effect would obviously be
worse with higher antennas. Perhaps a T/R switch with a third position
would prevent problems. The extra position would momentarily switch the
antenna to a dummy load (to safely absorb the RF in the cable) before
switching to receive.
I got the impression, based on my interpretation of the information,
that RF at lower frequencies is "heavier" than RF at higher frequencies. I
DISAGREE - - - If that were true VHF would be great for DXing!!! VHF is
line of sight THEREFORE this RF is most certainly heavier or it would go
